Personal Shopper Tips

Has anyone used personal shoppers at Macy’s or Bloomingdales? I know they offer these services but…?

are you obligated to buy? Should you tip? I kind of am revamping my wardrobe piece by piece and get overwhelmed when I go shopping, that I make poor decisions and end up with things that are not for me.I want to see if a personal shopper will help, if I give them the guidelines of what I am looking for. Also, I usually shop sales. Will this service help?

You will probably have a great time if you communicate well, if you have gotten a good shopper, and especially if you repeat your use of her. The better she knows you, the better she’ll work for you, including giving you a call when something you like goes on sale. At the least she should be able to know what would look good on you, and go right to it and pull it out for you to try on. She should also bring or exchange items for you while you’re in the dressing room.

If the shopper is employed by the store you don’t need to tip her, it’s part of the service. If she is independent, she charges you by the hour, and the same applies. However, I have seen people tip sales help (around $10) when they have really gone beyond what they needed to and were a great help. I think that is unusual, though.
