Personal Shopper Ma

Why is it necessary to pretend that a salutation means you are respecting someone?
It is often used as a cloak to pretend you respect someone, when you do not,
After asking people why they call shoppers in stores, the word ma’am , basically the store policy is to call anyone over 30 or 40 this? So how is this respectful ? To basically say “Hi person who looks old or ugly ”
If anything, it is more respectful to be treated the way sales personell treat people who do not fit the criteria of being called a salutation, which is, they do not call them anything, they just talk about things related to the transaction etc…without calling them a salutation.
Source: Personal observation, and asking honest sales people about what kind of customers who fit the criteria of being called salutations and what kind do not get slammed with a salutation.
This is just mean, and unnecessary, Can anyone prove that it is necessary to call anyone a salutation ? A form of labeling and name calling is useful to who?
As far as work ethics are concerned, it doesn’t matter what YOU think of a person . . . ALL people deserve to be treated with courtesy. A salutation isn’t so much a respect issue as it is a courtesy issue.
By the way, the definition of ’salutation’ is: something uttered, written, or done by way of greeting, welcome, recognition, etc…
Grazie, ma…
