Personal Shopper Fashion

Do you need qualifications to become a professional stylist?
I want to become a fashion stylist and style clothes for fashion magazines and celebrities! I love clothes but I am no good at sewing so being a stylist or maybe even a personal shopper would be great for me. I am choosing subjects for A Level but I don’t know which ones to choose which might help me. Any ideas? I chose Art, Graphics and History for GCSE and am probably going to get C’s and D’s.
If you seriously want to get into fashion magazines and style clothes for celebrities, then you’re going to have to do some serious work, otherwise being a regular stylist will mean working at the local hairdressers. (not that that’s a bad thing, but it doesn’t sound like what you really want).
If i was you, I’d really work hard on your GCSEs and get them way above Cs and Ds and then you’ll have a good bit of ground work for A levels. I suggest that for A levels you look at Art, and Business. I don’t know what other subjects are available in your sixth form, but it would be good to have another craft or design based one – or perhaps even ICT. Then pick something a bit different depending on what you’re good at.
To be honest, I would also look into what you can do now to broaden your artistic portfolio – do some local projects which will give you a taste for design, or work with some local businesses who specialise in art and design. Look around – you need to be really proactive if you want to be better than everyone else – and if you want to be taken seriously by fashion mags, and high-end stylists then you’re going to have to demonstrate a real commitment to the industry and that requires doing a lot more work than just regular school work.
When you get to sixth form, it might be good to see if they do young enterprise there too – that gives you a lot of opportunities for creativity, and a glimpse of how businesses operate.
Good luck!
